Women’s hockey defeats Holy Cross, 3-1, in first round of Hockey East tournament

PROVIDENCE, RI –The No. 7-ranked Providence College women’s hockey team defeated the No. 10 Holy Cross Crusaders in the opening round of the 2022 Hockey East tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at Schneider Arena.

-Holy Cross went first, 1-0, with a goal from Carlie Magier 9:31 into the first period. The Crusaders entered the first intermission with the lead after being passed by the Friars, 5-22.
Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) found the equalizer for the Friars 2:35 into the second period, 1-1 for their team leading 11and goal of the season. She was assisted by Maddy Coene (Clayton, NY) and Barnett Hunter (Caledon, Ontario) on the rebound goal.
– First-year student Ashley Clark (North Weymouth, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal for the Friars just 3:31 from the start of the third period, assisted by Barnett.
-The Crusaders pulled goaltender Jada Brenon with just under two minutes left in regulation time for the extra forward. KC Brooks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) capitalized on the empty net with 1:33 remaining in regulation, 3-1.
-The brothers outshot the Crusaders, 45-23, in 60 minutes.
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) recorded 22 saves for a .957 save percentage on the night.
-Tonight was the very first post-season meeting between the brothers and the Crusaders. Providence never lost to Holy Cross during the Crusaders’ four-year tenure in Hockey East, posting a perfect 13-0-0 record.
-The Brothers are 20-21 all-time in the Hockey East tournament.

The Brothers will travel to Burlington, Vermont, for the quarter-final round of the 2022 Hockey East tournament this Saturday, February 26. The puck drop is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
