Uxbridge School Athletic Center dedicated to the memory of rower Holy Cross Grace Rett – CBS Boston

UXBRIDGE (CBS) — Two years and a day after her tragic death, a new gymnasium is opening in honor of Grace Rett. The Holy Cross rower was killed in a van crash while on a team trip to Florida in January 2020.

On Sunday, family and friends gathered at Our Lady of the Valley Regional School, Uxbridge. Rett and her sister Brianne Rett attended school as children.

“She was a light wherever she went. Strong in studies, fearless in competing for athletics and had great faith in everything,” said Brianne Rett.

Grace’s mother was also present for the opening of the new establishment.

“It’s the rainbow after the storm, I guess,” said Mary Jo Rett. “It means everything to us to see it finished.”

The Grace Rhett Sports Complex and Education Center, aptly called the GRACE Center, will host gym classes, games and other educational activities.

The center was built through the fundraising efforts of Rett’s rowing teammates and donations from the community.

Rett’s memory and accomplishments line the walls of this building.

Less than a week before her death, Grace set a world record by rowing 62 consecutive hours.

Her sister Brianne said the center serves as a reminder of Grace’s spirit.

“It’s awesome,” Brianne said. “I really feel her presence here through all the community members who have come and through everything in the gymnasium that reminds me of her.”
