PURI: Lord Jagannath and his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra were adorned at Rajrajeswar Besha on Pousa Purnima on Monday.

Early in the morning, servants performed Mangala Alati, Mailam, Tadap Lagi and Abakash rituals of deities and offered Gopal Bhog. Thereafter, servants dressed the deities in gold ornaments in addition to their regalia and weapons.

The ornaments were brought from the temple treasury under tight security while three sets of Simhari servants dressed the deities. Given the ongoing pandemic, the temple remained closed to the public. Rajrajeswar or Suna Besha is seen four times inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple in addition to once on the floats which is done outside the temple during the annual Rath Yatra.

Meanwhile, Puri Govardhan Peetha Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati conducted the Tirth Mahodadhi Aaarti on Monday in strict adherence to Covid protocols to appease the sea god Barunadeb.

Also present were BJP leader Uma Bharati, Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb and some Mahant Mutt. Due to Covid restrictions only 100 people were allowed.

During the day, the Pushyabhishek ritual of the Gajapati was also performed. The Gajapati was presented with the royal ring and headgear on his ancestral throne. This marked the delegation of some of his powers to Aditya Narayan, a minor servant, designating him as ‘Mudirasta’ to perform rituals including Chhera Pahanra in his absence over the following year.
