Ohio man accused of beheading his mother says the Holy Spirit told him she was the devil

MARIETTA, Ohio (WJW) – A man in southern Ohio is accused of killing his foster mother because he claimed the Holy Spirit told him she was the devil.

Lionel J. Gore, 34, is charged with murder in the death of Diane Gore. It happened at a house in New Matamoras on November 5th.

A 6-year-old boy told detectives he saw his uncle saw his grandmother’s neck sawn with a knife, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said in court documents. Lionel Gore set the house on fire and the boy eventually had to crawl to escape the smoke.

When the victim’s sister arrived at the house, she found Lionel Gore covered in blood and crying, “Walk away or I’ll kill you next.” The woman tried to enter, but could not because of the flames. Meanwhile, Gore runs away.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and found Diane Gore’s body in an upstairs bedroom. She had been beheaded.

Wetzel County Sheriff’s Deputies spotted Lionel Gore’s vehicle and pursued him. Court documents say he struck two sheriff’s vehicles before being taken into custody.

Detectives questioned Lionel Gore while he was in the hospital. He said, “I cut his head off and set him on fire,” according to the sheriff’s office. He told investigators that he killed his mother because the Holy Spirit told him to do so and she was the devil.
