Men’s lacrosse opens 2022 season at Holy Cross

Providence College men’s lacrosse team travels to Worcester, Mass. for a non-conference game against the Holy Cross Crusaders for its 2022 season opener on Saturday, February 5 at 1:00 p.m.

SERIES BREAKDOWN…

Since 1980, the Brethren and Crusaders have met 31 times. Holy Cross leads the all-time series, 17-14. Providence comes into Saturday’s game having won each of the last five games against Holy Cross.

The teams last met in the 2020 campaign. Providence defeated Holy Cross, 6-4, in Providence, RI Matt Grillon Grillo tied his career high with five goals. He scored his second hat trick of the season and sixth of his career as of that game.

BROTHERS CHOSEN TO FINISH FIFTH IN THE GREAT EAST POLL…

Providence was chosen to finish fifth in the BIG EAST 2022 Pre-Season Coaches Poll (9 points). Georgetown is chosen to win the league, having garnered five first-place votes and 25 points overall. Denver (21 points), which received a first-place vote, is second and Villanova (17 points) is selected third. Marquette (13 points) finished fourth and St. John’s (five points) sixth.

GRILLO TAKES ALL-BIG EAST PRESEASON AWARDS…

The BIG EAST announced on Wednesday January 19 that Providence College Matt Grillon (Setauket, NY) was named to the 2022 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Grillo, a senior captain, played in 12 games last season, including nine starting lineup appearances. The BIG EAST All-Tournament team selection led the Friars in goals (22) and was fourth on the team in points (25). Grillo scored a season-high five goals against St. John’s on April 10. He was named BIG EAST Attack Player of the Week on March 13 and April 13, 2021.

CAPTAINS 2022…
Matt Grillon, Evan McGreen and Mike O’Grady have been named team captains and will lead a squad of 33 returning players and 16 newcomers in the 2022 campaign.

NEXT MAN-UP…

The Brothers will be looking to replace top point scorers, Ryan Nawrocki and Ryan Zimmerman, during the 2022 season. Nawrocki recorded a team-high 33 points (12 goals, 21 assists), while Zimmerman had 29 (19 goals, 10 assists). Providence also lost their starting goaltender, Toby Berthoud, who ranked 16th in the nation in saves per game (12.54) last season, while recording a .509 save percentage and a 12.36 goals-against average. The Brothers will also look to replace the face-off specialist RJ Romeo. Romeo finished the season with a score of 146-290 (.503) percent on face-off “X” and had a team-high 56 balls on the ground.

THE KEY PLAYERS IN OFFENSE…

Providence will be anchored by the senior captain Matt Grillongraduate student Evan McGreen and junior John Hoffman, who will look to lead the team through the 2022 season. Grillo will return after leading the team in goals (22) and game-winning goals (two) in 2021. He ranked second in shots ( 90) and finished fourth on the team in points (25). A two-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, Grillo was also selected to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. Additionally, Grillo was named to the 2022 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.

McGreen contributed 13 points in the 2021 campaign, in which he played 10 games for the Friars. McGreen is also a four-time draft pick to the BIG EAST varsity team and was inducted into Providence College’s Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society in 2020. Hoffman also added 13 points during the 2021 season, with 10 goals and three assists. He made an appearance on the BIG EAST weekly honor roll.

GOULD AND LATIMER ANCHOR DEFENSE…
Matt Gould (Darien, Connecticut) and Grant Latimer (Topsfield, Mass.) will lead Providence’s defense this season. Gould started all 13 games for the Brothers and recorded 10 turnovers. Latimer played 10 games, including nine appearances in the starting lineup. He had 11 turnovers caused, the second most on the team.

WELCOME TO FRIARTOWN…

The Brothers welcomed 15 freshmen to the men’s lacrosse program in the fall of 2022. Newcomers include AJ Alexander (Syoset, NY), Ryan Bell (Port Jefferson, NY), Paddy Burns (Orono, Minnesota), Noah D’Andrea (Lincroft, New Jersey), Gregg Denison (Acton, Mass.), Will Ferraro (Califon, NJ), Vincent Flanagan (Kenilworth, Ill.), Jack Horrigan (Lutherville, Maryland), Richie Hughson (Avondale, Pennsylvania), Gibson Linnehan (Pennington, New Jersey), Stephen Markowski (Centerport, NY), Pat McAleavey (Trumbull, Connecticut), Quinn McConnaughey (Cohasset, Mass.), Albert Paniccia (East Norwhich, NY), and Chris Simonton (Setauket, NY). In addition, the Brothers welcome the transfer of graduates Drew Edwards (South Kingstown, RI).

HOLY CROSS SCOUTING…

The Crusaders closed the 2021 season with a 2-4 overall record and a 1-3 record in the Patriot League.

Holy Cross averaged 7.83 goals and 32.0 shots per game in 2021 and finished fourth in the Patriot (North) League standings.

PLAYERS TO WATCH…

Senior defenseman Chris Conlin led the NCAA in turnovers per game during the 2021 season, at a rate of 3.17 per game. He totaled 19 turnovers caused overall. He was named to the All-Patriot League and All-New England second teams in 2021 and was selected to the All-Patriot Academic League. He also won Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on March 1 after causing five turnovers and recovering six ground balls.

Senior goaltender AJ Fox returns to the net for the Crusaders after starting all six games of the 2021 season. He averaged 14.17 saves per game and recorded double-digit saves in every contest, with a high of the 18-stop season at Syracuse.

The Brothers host Ocean State foe Bryant University at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on Saturday, February 12 at 12:00 p.m. for Providence’s 2022 home opener.
