Construction of the new school is currently underway. It will welcome students from kindergarten to grade 6 this fall, but it should be extended in the coming years to grade 9.

“Everything about the new Holy Spirit will be new: a new logo, new colors. It’s a pretty phenomenal school,” Principal Kim Welte noted.

The director is also quite “new”: Welte joined the Holy Spirit community five months ago.

“I’m a new director at Cochrane, just appointed in September, so I’ve gotten to know everyone,” she said.

“We are so excited to be part of Cochrane and the Fireside community and hope to be amazing community members like we have been here.”

Holy Spirit School has occupied its current site for 27 years.

“The building itself is twenty-seven years of memories here,” Welte said.
“Some of our students’ students are coming here now. And there’s a lot of family history, Cochrane isn’t a massive community, so there’s a lot of grandmothers and kids and kids coming here.

The new facility will include features such as an extra-large gymnasium and an accessible play area at Fireside School.

“I think probably the most unique feature of the new Holy Spirit is that if you believe it, the glass has just been placed in the library or places of learning,” she added.

“It’s huge, you won’t miss it. It’s huge and blue and there’s a cross in the middle, definitely one of the nicest features of the brand new school.

“We’re also hoping to have an outdoor classroom, which might take us until our second year to get it, but we’re very excited about that, especially with the mountains and the beauty of Cochrane.”

The school expects to retain most of its students and staff as it climbs the hill to its new home next year.

“Our sixth graders are a bit sad that they won’t be able to be part of it next year because they will be moving to St. Tim’s next year,” the principal said.

“We certainly welcome anyone who would like to inquire about registration. We want to fill our school, if we have space and resources, everyone is welcome to inquire.
