Holy Cross students form a ‘human Rosary’

Some believe it is only a coincidence that Mary Street in LaSalle leads directly to the front door of Holy Cross Catholic School.

But do not tell this to the staff and students of the school, who believe that it is a symbol that Mary, the mother of Jesus, is watching the school.

Principal Steve Bellaire said the school was built after the road was already there and named. He said no one had thought about it until recently, when it was pointed out that St. Mary’s leads to the cross hanging in front of the school.

“We do not consider it to be just an accident,” he said. “The school was built after the name of the road. After being brought to our attention it sort of took on a life of its own. We think this is a sign that Mary is always looking for the staff and students of Holy Cross.

As a celebration, the school’s 750 staff and students held a Mary Meets the Cross celebration on Friday. They formed a circular rosary starting at the front door, on Mary Street and back to school.

The celebration seemed appropriate since the month of May is the Feast of Mary. Loudspeakers were installed outside to guide the students into the correct position, LaSalle police officers helped block the street, and local dignitaries and other special guests were in attendance.

“It was interesting that this was all right on our doorstep,” said Bellaire. “It was just like something we should be celebrating.”
