Friday, May 20 High School Highlights: Watertown and Holy Cross vie for NVL women’s tennis title

The Watertown Women’s Tennis Team will play at Holy Cross today at 10:30 am for the Naugatuck Valley League Championship at Woodland High in Beacon Falls.
Watertown advanced to the NVL Final, edging Wolcott 4-3, while Holy Cross beat Woodland 5-2.
In singles action, No. 4 Anesa Xhena of Watertown defeated Analise Pilarski, 8-5. In doubles, Watertown won all three matches.
In first place in doubles, Meghan Hughes and Maggie Dassatti beat Wolcott’s Emma Bengston and Mikeala LePage, 8-2. At No. 2, Emalyn Osborne and Charlotte Manalo beat Gianna Molina and Tiffany Ly, 8-1, while No. 3. Lauren Ashmore and Bora Musa beat. Jenna Marciano and Ava Ciampi, 8-6.
In singles, Wolcott’s Reese Yost defeated Allison Stoto, 8-0, at No. 1. Wolcott’s No. 2 Gabrielle Petroniro beat. Sydney Butwell, 8-6, while Wolcott’s No. 3 Gia Shoban beat Vanessa Cipriano, 8-6.
In the other semifinal, Michaela Bell of Holy Cross defeated Bela Mastropietro, 8-2, for first place in singles. At No. 2, Holy Cross’ Ella Mancini beat Audrey Fencil, 8-2 while Holy Cross’ Kaya Bonderenko beat Brooke Reilly, 8-4 at No. 3. It was Reilly’s first loss of the season.
Woodland’s Yasmeen Galal beat Mandy Burne, 8-4, at No. 4.
In doubles No. 1, Meghan Ruhl and Riley Montini of Woodland beat Jayme Erdtmann-Rachael Honegger, 9-7, their first loss of the season.
No. 2 Caitlyn Coletti and Julia Bell of Holy Cross beat Cori Patchofsky and Laura DeGennaro, 8-4. At No. 3, CC Bunlue and Lyvia Bartoli of Holy Cross beat Cate Fazzone and Vivien Mogyoros, 8-3.
Litchfield 7, Thomaston 0: Litchfield (13-1) clinched at least one tie for its fourth consecutive Berkshire League women’s tennis title.
Singles players Ava Atwood, Anna Devaux, Leah Sepples and RileySouthard all won in straight sets, as did doubles players Claire Olmstead and Emily Migliorisi, Peyton Weik and Baylie Pesce and Jillian Saunders and Rachel Glander.
Berkshire Boys League Tournament: Wamogo’s Nolan Turtoro will meet Litchfield’s Ben Mwanza in the singles semi-final of the BL tournament on Monday at 1pm at Nystrom Park in Thomaston.
Litchfield’s Jack Honigmann will meet Shepaug’s Lane Faison in the other semi-final.
In doubles, Litchfield’s Ethan Cowles and Harry Barnes beat Nonnewaug’s Ben Shea and Christian Swanson, 6-0, 6-4 in the semi-finals.
Luis Missana and Owen Andrews of Shepaug defeated Dan Suave and Connor Miller of Thomaston, 6-4, 6-4, in the other semifinal.
Cowles and Barnes from Litchfield will meet Missana and Andrews from Shepaug in the final.

Tim Nugent had 33 assists while Gianluca Giardina (11), Andrew Wang (10) and Will Allen (10) all had double-digit wins for Cheshire in their 3-1 loss to Shelton. The sets scores were 25-22, 21-25, 27-25, 27-25.
