Father Neil Muir appointed Rector of Holy Spirit Seminary

FR Neil Muir was installed yesterday as the new Rector of Holy Spirit Seminary at the Seminary Chapel.

The seven Bishops of Queensland were there for the installation.

Archbishop of Brisbane Mark Coleridge blessed Father Muir and the seminary staff and students.

Fr. Muir said it was a great gathering of the province during the blessing and said he was privileged to serve the young men under his care as priest and rector.

“I am in awe of the faith of these young people and the energy and love they have for the future to which they are called,” he said.

“I also really appreciate the facilities we have.

“It’s an incredible facility, very different from when I was a student – it’s a sign of support and investment from the bishops and people of the province.”

Fr Muir, who has held leadership positions in the Diocese of Cairns for many years, said his priority for the first few weeks was to get to know the place and better discern his role.

He said it was a unique position for the seminary to be located within the Australian Catholic University.

“That’s one of the things I appreciate is the close relationship between us and the university,” he said.

“We’ve been hosted at the university a few times and we’ve hosted some of their leaders here.”

Fr. Muir said he has settled in well at the seminary since taking office earlier this year.

“It’s a good group of students, very gifted young men,” he said.

“There are eight (students) in-house at the seminary and seven in pastoral placement, including two deacons.

“The staff have been more than welcoming and we have very talented staff.

“I feel very welcome here.”
