Chalmette edges out Holy Cross in rivalry contest to start season; Hannan takes down Slidell – Crescent City Sports

Baseball Zone Readiness Report for Tuesday, February 22

What a way to open the season for two longtime rivals.

For 147 years, Holy Cross School was located in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, bordering St. Bernard Parish before moving to Gentilly.

For many years Holy Cross attracted a significant number of its students from St. Bernard Parish.

While Jesuit has always been Holy Cross’ biggest rival in athletics, Chalmette High is clearly its second biggest rival over a long period.

For the Owls, the Tigers are undoubtedly their biggest rival over the same period.

The two rivals collided to open the baseball season at Noel Suarez Stadium on Monday night and it was a game and a crowd worthy of such a rivalry.

In front of a packed house with many people standing and watching, Chalmette beat Holy Cross 1-0 in a thriller.

The Tigers charged in the top of the seventh but reliever Bryce Babin hit the team to secure a dramatic 1-0 win.

Chalmette got the only run of the game late in the third inning on a Jaden Williams triple and Brendan Zahn drove it.

Zahn, who also had a stolen base, took the win, going 5 2/3 innings without allowing a hit. Bryce Wilson relieved Zahn and got a strike.

Babin came on in the seventh and the Tigers charged on an error, a walk and a no-out single before Babin hit wide.

Eddie Muhleisen started well in a losing cause for Holy Cross.

A school that once resided in St. Bernard Parish also opened with a victory.

Bishop Hannan overtook Slidell 4-2 at the Coquille Sports Complex.

The Hawks took a 2-0 lead after two innings and led 4-1 after three innings. The Tigers got their last run in the sixth inning.

Senior Reid Passauer went five innings for the win, allowing just one run on three hits. Passauer walked two and struck out six, using 75 throws. Senior Andre Roux came on to pitch the last two innings to recover the stoppage, allowing a run on a hit with two walks and two strikeouts.

Junior Colin Hebert had a double and two RBIs while seniors Josh Alonzo and Bryan Coe had a double and an RBI.

Hannan and Chalmette will meet next Monday in Chalmette.
