Bryant opens his homestand with a 15-5 win over Holy Cross

SMITHFIELD, RI — Five different players had multiple hits as the Bryant University baseball team opened a nine-game homestand with a 15-5 victory over Holy Cross Tuesday afternoon at Conaty Park.

Jackson Phinney finished with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored, Matt Woods drove in five, and Matt Smith and James Myler each hit their first career homers. Smith finished a pair of hits, Stan DeMartinis III had two hits and three RBIs, and Alex Lane had three hits and scored three runs.

John MacDonald took the win Tuesday, pitching 3.0 scoreless innings in his second start of the year. He allowed three hits and didn’t walk a batter. Jack Halbruner added 2.0 scoreless relief innings.

  • Bryant scored eight times in the second inning to jump ahead. The big hit of the inning was a three-run homer from Woods.

How did it happen

  • After a scoreless first, Bryant busted for eight runs in the second inning. Bryant charged the bases and Phinney won the first run with a single to the center. DeMartinis followed with a two-run brace down the left field line. Two batters later, Woods threw the first pitch he saw over the right center wall for a three-run home run. Tuccillo added an RBI brace and Phinney walked with the bases loaded to make it 8-0.
  • Matt Smith extended Bryant’s lead with a long homer to right field in third. It was his first career home run.
  • The Black and Gold tacked on four runs in the fourth. Phinney drove home the first run of the inning with a ground ball down the middle that hit the second base sack and cored down the center. DeMartinis scored a run with a left single and Woods capped the inning with a two-run double that bounced off the first base bag and into shallow right field.
  • Holy Cross went up the board with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning.
  • Myler then collected his first career hit and first career home run with a swing in the sixth.
  • The Crusaders added two more runs in the seventh.
  • Lane closed the scoring with an RBI single in the eighth.
